Kopitiam: Plastic Stools

Kopitiam: Plastic Stool

Kopitiam, the local version of a coffee shop found in the Lion City, Singapore. These plastic stools have long been a staple furniture for these coffee shops. The initial idea was meant to be for the MUJI myBag Competition 2017, in conjunction with the opening of the Singapore Flagship store.

The competition called for items that fit the theme of traditional artefacts in Singapore, and their rediscovered uses. The Kopitiam Plastic Stool fit the bill perfectly. Lightweight, durable, easily stacked - it was a convenient and affordable option. Something I thought would tie in with MUJI's concept of design.

The Design
Four different angles to depict the various views of the chair - front, side, front-diagonal, top. I created the vectors for them, then made two versions, one of the outlines, and the other of the fill. I had these laid out in a seemingly haphazard pattern in my mind, to show movement and to lessen the rigidity that came with vectorised images. The image(see bottom) is the outcome of the pattern of plastic stools I arrived at.

No Wins
Unfortunately, the design did not manage to get a winning vote. Fortunately, it meant I could make use of the design and hence, expand on it. I then laid them out in clean layouts, a little showcase of the different angles, making use of both the vector outlines and fills.

On top of that I made some gifs and videos using the plastic stool vectors, further down.
